Three Cooling Summer Smoothie Recipes

Feeling the heat this summer? When the sun’s rays are stronger outside, you might notice fiery Pitta dosha heating up in your own body. Signs of healthy Pitta on the move include higher energy levels, feelings of optimism, and an overall brightening within. But if Pitta dosha gets overheated, you may start to feel a little irritable and frustrated, or even experience rashes, acne, and other skin disruptions. Fortunately, Pitta can easily be brought back into balance with a little cooling and sweetness.

For a fast and easy way to give Pitta dosha some TLC, try these three cooling summer smoothie recipes, below. Each recipe calls for Pitta-pacifying ingredients and is chock-full of vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients, and healthy fiber. You may notice we’ve left out some smoothie-ingredient standards — like yogurt and banana — which can aggravate Pitta. We’re pretty sure you’ll love these sweet, creamy recipes just the same!

1) Fresh and Fruity Sweet Berry Rose Smoothie

Rose Smoothie

Fresh, sun-warmed berries from the farmers market, anyone? Sweet berries are juicy and excellent for cooling and uplifting Pitta. Rose water balances Sadhaka Pitta, the subdosha of Pitta that governs the heart’s emotional processes. When summer’s heat brings Sadhaka Pitta out of balance, fiery emotions can arise. But after a few sips of this sweet smoothie, everything will be coming up roses.

Ingredients
1 cup almond milk, or unsweetened oat milk
3/4 cup fresh, ripe, sweet (not sour) berries
1/4 cup coconut water (excellent for hydration)
1/2 cup coconut milk (combine organic cream of coconut with a little water to obtain thick coconut milk)
A splash of food-grade Organic Rose Water, or a teaspoon of Organic Rose Petal Spread
1 tsp maple syrup, or to taste

Directions
Using a high-speed blender, combine all ingredients in the blender and blend until smooth. Adjust all seasonings to taste. Serve cool.

Optional:
Garnish with rose petals or mint leaves.



2) Sattvic Almond Date Smoothie

Dates are considered a nutritive tonic in Ayurveda, because they are sattvic — promoting vitality, joy, strength — and they nourish the body’s tissues and immunity levels. Medjool dates are particularly sweet and juicy, making them especially good for Pitta dosha. This shake is a creamy, filling treat that’s a perfect post-workout snack and a great breakfast in the dog days of summer.

Ingredients
1 cup almond milk, oat milk or cow’s milk
1-4 soft, pitted Medjool dates, to taste. If you wish you may soak the dates overnight.
A pinch of cardamom powder

Directions
Using a high-speed blender, combine all ingredients in the blender and blend until smooth. Adjust cardamom to taste. Serve cool.

Optional: For more protein and a velvety texture, add a Tbsp of smooth almond butter OR a scoop of vanilla protein powder.



3) Light, Energizing Green Machine Smoothie

Mmm, nothing like a tasty glass of greens. Avocado not only gives this recipe a rich, creamy texture, but it also contains “good fat,” which helps you absorb all those nutrients in the spinach. Coconut milk and juicy pineapple add sweetness and a light, tropical flavor — all things that make Pitta sing.

Ingredients
1/2 ripe avocado
1/2 cup coconut milk
1/2 cup coconut water (combine organic cream of coconut with a little water to obtain thick coconut milk)
1 cup chopped fresh, sweet pineapple
1 handful of kale
1 tsp maple syrup (or to taste)
A pinch of pink Himalayan salt

Directions
Using a high-speed blender, combine all ingredients in the blender and blend until smooth. Adjust all seasonings to taste. Serve cool.
