Cooling Summer Water

Why we love this recipe

Feeling the heat this summer? Rather than reaching for an iced tea, try this naturally hydrating Ayurvedic beverage. A cooling blend of sweet fennel, clove, and rose buds, it’ll quench your thirst and harmonize your senses. (Related read: Seven Tips for Staying Cool this Summer.) This beverage also helps to ease occasional constipation and bloating, aiding overall digestion.

The Ayurvedic Take on Iced Drinks

While icy-cold drinks and foods (like ice cream) are tempting in hot weather, they can also hamper your agni (digestive fire), leading to occasional indigestion. When possible, it’s better to favor room-temperature water and beverages with naturally cooling botanicals—like rose petals.

A Delicious, Drinkable Rose Water Recipe

In Ayurveda, roses are well known for their cooling, soothing influence on the mind and body. You’ll find rose petals in a wide range of Ayurvedic foods, from our Organic Soothe Pitta Tea to our delicious Organic Rose Petal Spread.

When you’re feeling overheated, our non-food-grade Organic Rose Water Spray is a refreshing facial mist. And for rose water meant as a beverage, not a beauty product, try this recipe.

Ingredients

  • Two quarts of water
  • ¼ teaspoon of fennel seed
  • 2 dried rose buds (we recommend organic)
  • 1 clove bud

Directions

  1. Boil water for two minutes. Take it off the heat and add fennel, rose buds, and clove.
  2. Store it hot inside a thermos, but before drinking pour it into a cup and let it cool to room temperature.
