Green Detox Shake

Why we love this recipe

This hydrating green detox smoothie is an excellent choice for late-summer days. Sweet, lemony, and herbaceous, it gently cleanses the srotas (bodily channels) while cooling the mind and body. Our in-house Vaidya (Ayurvedic expert) recommends adding this detox shake to your list of foods to favor while doing an early autumn cleanse.

Smoothies and Ayurveda

Most smoothie recipes call for cold, heavy ingredients like yogurt, milk, bananas, frozen fruit, and even ice—all of which can dampen the agni (digestive fire), leading to sluggish digestion. For that reason, smoothies aren’t generally recommended in Ayurveda. But there are a few exceptions! Like this green detox shake.

 A Cleansing Shake with Cilantro

A cleansing blend of cooling, Pitta-balancing veggies (like cucumbers and celery) and purifying herbs (like cilantro and parsley), this detox shake aids your digestion rather than slowing it down. Cilantro deserves a special shout-out in this recipe; the herb is prized in Ayurveda for its cooling and purifying properties. (Always choose fresh, organic vegetables, herbs, and fruits for detoxification.)

Servings: 2

Ingredients

  • 1½ cups of water
  • 1 medium-size cucumber
  • 3 large stalks of celery
  • ⅓ bunch of cilantro
  • ⅓ bunch of parsley (parsley can be doubled as cilantro substitute)
  • Juice of half a fresh lemon

 Directions

  1. Clean ingredients thoroughly and blend until smooth in a blender.
  2. Drink while still fresh for best results.
